Snowfall hinders work in some areas of Rinpung Region

The heavy and continuous snowfall from 13th to 16th December 2014 in high altitude areas of Haa and Paro had affected the timber extraction activities at Selela,

Zonglela and Bitekha East Forest Management Units. The forest road access from the main highway to the cable craning and timber extraction site is covered with almost 5 inches of snow cover that had restricted access to the work site. The timber craning, felling, cross cutting, debarking, stacking and transportation works has been badly hampered. The NRDCL officials working at the work site tried to clear the road by spraying salt and by engaging labourers but the incessant snowfall had made the situation worse rather than improving.

The officials of the region are worried that timber production target for 2014 from the above areas could be affected as the snowfall has not melted. With temperatures dropping continuously, it is likely to affect the overall operations till March –April 2015.
