“Closing the Resources Gap”

As per Executive Order of the RGoB on 7th November 2007, the company became Natural Resources Development Corporation (NRDCL) with a broader mandate to manage timber, sand, stone and other natural resources of the country.

NRDCL is 100% government owned corporation under Druk Holdings & Investment and governed by the Companies Act of the Kingdom of Bhutan 2000 and Articles of Incorporation.

Accordingly, the DoFPS handed over these resources to the NRDCL since early 2008. Sand was then a scarce resource in the far eastern dzongkhag of Trashiyangtse. The demand for sand at that time was met from Chazam area of Trashigang, which is about 45 kms away. Despite exorbitant prices, quality was always a concern as it was mostly mixed with mud and gravels.

Considering these problems, the Regional office of NRDCL at Zhonggar initiated some alternative measures to extract sand by trenching of river beds at Dungtsekhar, just a kilometer and half from Trashiyangtse town. This initiative proved quite effective and useful as high quality sand was locally available at a much cheaper price. The community highly appreciated this move of the NRDCL which enabled them to save a substantial amount of resources for construction.

Looking at the success at Dungtsekhar, the Region had replicated the same technique at Doksum and Chazam area (under Trashigang) and is looking forward to follow the same under Mongar and Lhuentse Dzongkhag, as well. Today, the Region is a proud recipient of appreciation from the management and our friends are committed to rigorously pursue their mission of ‘closing the resources gap’ in other areas through such initiatives.

“The nation behaves well if it treats the natural resources as assets which it must turn over to the next generation increased, and not impaired in value.”

Theodore Roosevelt
